What Is DOOH Advertising and How Does It Work?

Many marketers who are new to the Out-of-Home advertising industry can find the term DOOH — short for Digital Out-of-Home — confusing at first. Unlike familiar static billboards, DOOH operates through digital screens, allowing content to change flexibly according to time and campaign requirements.

What Is DOOH?

DOOH (Digital Out-of-Home) is a form of Out-of-Home advertising displayed on digital screens instead of static printed materials such as vinyl banners, standees, or advertising panels.

The key difference from traditional OOH is that DOOH content can be changed, rotated, or updated without requiring physical replacement.

How Does DOOH Work?

A DOOH system typically consists of three layers of technical infrastructure: display hardware (LCD/LED screens), a content management system for uploading and scheduling content, and network connectivity for transmitting data to each screen location.

For screen clusters integrated with 5G infrastructure, content transmission and updates can be executed according to specific campaign schedules and milestones.

How Is DOOH Different from Traditional OOH?

Traditional OOH uses fixed content, and changing that content incurs additional printing and installation costs.

DOOH offers flexible content that can be updated remotely and rotated to serve multiple brands on the same screen.

Focus Media Vietnam in Vietnam’s DOOH Ecosystem

Focus Media Vietnam operates a network of more than 18,000 DOOH screens across more than 2,000 buildings in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with a focus on Elevator Media environments, including elevator cabins and building lobbies.

The brand was formed through an investment transaction (M&A) between global Focus Media — the company that pioneered the Elevator Media Advertising model in Shanghai in 2003 — and Goldsun Focus Media, which had accumulated extensive local market knowledge through its operations in Vietnam’s Elevator Media Advertising sector since 2007.

The M&A transaction was announced in early 2024.

The combination of Focus Media’s financial strength and global operating experience with Goldsun Focus Media’s deep understanding of the local market forms the foundation of Focus Media Vietnam’s current market position.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is DOOH simply an “electronic billboard”?

A: Not entirely. An electronic billboard is one type of DOOH display, but DOOH itself also includes the underlying content management and network connectivity layers that enable content to be changed flexibly.

Q: Is DOOH more expensive than traditional OOH?

A: Costs depend on the specific package and buildings selected. Brands should consult directly with the advisory team to determine an appropriate solution based on their objectives and budget.

Q: Can small businesses run DOOH campaigns?

A: Because DOOH often allows businesses to select specific building clusters or geographic areas rather than purchasing the entire network, businesses can consider a campaign scope that fits their budget. It is recommended to discuss the available options with the advisory team.
